On September 18, 1960 Fidel Castro and his delegation arrived in New York City and, after sleeping at the Shelburne Hotel for one night, were asked for a $10,000 deposit for their twenty rooms after allegedly causing extensive damage. The Cubans either didn’t have it or were insulted by the demand (reports vary), and Castro pointedly expressed his annoyance at a press conference, which is where the above photo was shot forty-one years ago today. Castro said that if the situation wasn't resolved he and his delegation would sleep in Central Park. They were poor mountain people, he reminded everyone, and spending a few days outdoors wouldn't be a big deal. But Harlem’s stately Hotel Theresa, intervened with an offer of lodging and Castro moved uptown, where he was greeted by cheering crowds of Harlem residents. Some cheered because they supported Castro, or because they saw the move as a rebuke against Manhattan’s white establishment, or both. During his stay at the Theresa, Castro received visits from Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev and activist Malcolm X. The event prompted President Dwight D. Eisenhower to call the Cubans “troublemakers.”

the tiny island sags down stream

After all the jacks are in their boxes
And the clowns have all gone to bed
You can hear happiness staggering on down the street.
Footsteps dressed in red
And the wind whispers mary
A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken pieces of yesterdays life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife
And the wind, it cries mary
The traffic lights, they turn, uh, blue tomorrow
And shine their emptiness down on my bed
The tiny island sags down stream
cause the life that lived is,
Is dead
And the wind screams mary
Uh-will the wind ever remember
The names it has blow in the past?
And with this crutch, its old age, and its wisdom
It whispers no, this will be the last
And the wind cries mary

TRILCE EDICIONES: Soy Cuba: Cuban Cinema Posters From After the Revolution Introduction by Stephen Heller. Text by Carole Goodman, Claudio Sotolongo.

Soy Cuba presents a selection of the finest film posters produced in Cuba from the 1950s until the early 1970s. Famous around the world for their brash originality and bright, clear graphic sensibility, Cuban cinema posters of the Revolutionary era are held in as high esteem as the moodier and more abstract Polish film posters of the same era. Susan Sontag devoted a good part of her noted 1970 essay, "Posters: Advertisement, Art, Political Artifact, Commodity" to the particularly satisfying paradox they present. "The Cubans make posters to advertise culture in a society that seeks to treat culture as an ensemble of commodities-events and objects designed, whether consciously or not, for commercial exploitation. Then the very project of cultural advertising becomes somewhat paradoxical, if not gratuitous. And indeed, many of these posters do not really fill any practical need. A beautiful poster made for the showing in Havana of, say, a minor movie by Alain Jessura, every performance of which will be sold out anyway (because movies are one of the few entertainments available) is a luxury item, something done in the end for its own sake. More often than not, a poster for ICAIC [Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Arts] by Tony Reboiro or Eduardo Bachs amounts to the creation of a new work of art, supplementary to the film, rather than to a cultural advertisement in the familiar sense." Collected by designer Carole Goodman in collaboration with the ICAC and other Cuban specialists, this substantial compendium is a visual and intellectual treat.

it´s a party

found on the web: Cuban Party Invitation

Saturday, 7:30 PM
You are invited to our 10th annual Cuban Party where we will try, once again, to instill the best qualities of Cuban culture - food, music, drinks & dance - into an event. It's also a wonderful excuse for a party and a handy thematic.

Dress: Here's the scene: Fidel Castros mixing with Carmen Mirandas, 1950's Havana casino types in white dinner jackets, beach and pier bums, plantation owners, Poppa Hemingways, island girls, sports fishermen and one Elian (assuming my friend Andy P. does that whole “little boy” shorts & T-shirt thing again.) Me? I'll be resplendent in a new white dinner jacket (the old one got so pitted-out from the previous years' parties that I had to finally part with it - look for it on eBay - "lightly used...white dinner jacket...No Reserve.."). So, I'll have that whole Fredo Corleone/Cesar Romero thing going on. As for Laura, eye balls will be clicking at the sight of her Carmen Miranda inspired hat that is so jammed with fruit and feather and theme that the weight of it would break the neck of a Vegas show girl, but Laura somehow pulls it off. That, plus a smart outfit that screams color and fun. (God knows what the shoes will be like).

So there, quite a funky "handy thematic" ... FCs by the pound, Carmen Miranda by the kilo (who is not even Cuban), casino types, island girls, one Elian...

...

Los relojes de Cartier,
cansados de ver el mundo
desdoblarse en el no-ser,
se atrasaron un segundo;

a la Bolsa de Valores
se le quemó los frijoles
y cundieron los temores
y hablaron los caracoles.

El trapo y la escueta escoba
se pusieron a bailar
a deshora y a cantar
las traiciones de la Trova.

Con una labia alardosa
los teléfonos modernos
hablaban de "la imperiosa
nececidad de movernos

a pasos agigantados
hacia el Reino de las Cosas.
Morales, amodorrados,
como tristes mariposas

es sus cajas, construidas
con puntual seguridad,
entregamos nuestras vidas
al bin de la coseidad.
